British retirees decide to spend their golden years at a luxurious retirement hotel in India, only to be charmed by its vibrant culture. Adapted from the Sunday Times bestseller that inspired one of this century’s most beloved films, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is an upbeat comedy about taking risks and finding love where it may not be expected.
This film stars an ensemble cast of British actors, including Dev Patel, Judi Dench, Celia Imrie, Bill Nighy, Ronald Pickup, Penelope Wilton and Maggie Smith. Directed by John Madden and written by Ol Parker, the script features music composed by Paul Thomas Anderson.
Dev Patel stars as Sonny Kapoor, a dynamic hotelier with big plans. He meets Muriel (Maggie Smith), the co-manager of Marigold Hotel, to present his idea.
As the Marigold Hotel’s success continues to blossom, Sonny and Muriel begin looking for investors to help them expand into a larger, more elaborate establishment. Unfortunately, events intervene to disrupt Muriel’s wedding plans and require Sonny and the rest of the cast to manage multiple lives and relationships simultaneously.
With their families’ support, the cast embarks on an adventure that will shape them forever and teach them that life is about taking risks and accepting second chances. Along the way, they find romance as well as a renewed sense of purpose.
Despite some plot holes, the sequel to “Indiana Jones” is an endearing film that works even when it lacks the magic that made its predecessor such a success. Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy return for another great performance; plus there’s sweet writing and an affectionate appreciation of Indian culture which make this a winner.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, based on Deborah Moggach’s 2004 novel These Foolish Things, was directed by John Madden and produced by Participant Media and Blueprint Pictures at a cost of $10 million to produce.
This movie has been rated PG for some humor, sex and language. It can be purchased on DVD and Blu-ray from Fox Searchlight.
In its initial four weekends, Sleeper Hit earned $11 million at the US box office – making it a sleeper hit. Opening in 1,233 theaters across America, this film held its own against other new releases despite competition.
At its release, this film was one of the top 10 highest-grosing speciality releases in both the U.S. and international rankings, ranking amongst the top 25 titles overall.
This heartwarming comedy about transformation and travel is recommended for families with children ages six and older. Families will appreciate discussing the messages presented in the film, such as learning to take risks and appreciating second chances.
